Description

Vitamin D is a key nutrient for good health and plays an important role in calcium absorption and bone health. However, the most recent national surveillance data from 2015 shows that, among supplement non-users, more than 85% of Canadians are not meeting the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR).

To help address this inadequacy, Health Canada implemented a vitamin D fortification strategy. As part of the strategy, the vitamin D fortification levels in select foods have been updated, and additional foods have been added to the list of permitted fortification options. These changes to vitamin D fortification policy came into effect in 2022, with a transition period for industry ending on December 31, 2025.

Dietitians need to be aware of these modifications in the Canadian food marketplace to help their clients maintain and support their bone health with a food-first approach to meeting nutrient needs.

Webinar participants will:

  • Explore the evidence on vitamin D and its role in bone health as well as the emerging evidence on the impact of vitamin D on other health markers/conditions.
  • Understand the prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in Canada and the health risks associated with low intakes.
  • Learn about the main food sources of vitamin D in the Canadian diet and the rationale and goals of Health Canada’s vitamin D fortification policy.
